You WILL Make It Through Winter With This Survival Guide

Winter is coming…

With the official start of winter less than one month away, it's time to start thinking about all the ways we can make it through the coldest, most miserable months of the year (at least for those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere and Eastern part of the U.S.). And yes, there are many things we love about winter — playing in the snow, hot chocolate, spending time with family — but we are also faced with numerous beauty problems, flu season and dangerously cold temperatures. Taking care of your overall health and well-being is essential this season so we've pulled together some tips for your best winter yet.

Let’s start with the basics: warm clothes. It is possible to be fashionable and warm even in the snow, especially if you layer and pay attention to your extremities (ie head, feet, hands). We recommend investing in some lightweight undershirts and leggings to wear under sweaters and pants. The Uniqlo HEATTECH collection is a lifesaver. We also love thick wool tights and socks, knit beanies and gloves to keep your body toasty.

With the heat blasting, everything dries up in the winter and your body and skin will thank you for staying hydrated. Try drinking water with and in between meals, and switch to sparkling water with lime or lemon if you get sick of this tasteless (yet healthiest!) beverage. And for cold evenings we recommend hot water with a squeeze of lemon and spoonful of honey.

Speaking of hydration, one of our favorite winter drinks is a simple cup of tea. Truly the perfect thing to warm up any chilly afternoon, there are so many delicious and interesting teas to try. For the winter we love a rich spiced chai or a sweet vanilla tea with a dash of milk and sugar, and there is nothing better than a soothing cup of herbal tea right before bed. Even if you’re “not a tea drinker” we’re sure a cup of one of these flavors could convince you to convert.

Winter means germs, germs, germs, flu season and trying to avoid getting sick. We recommend boosting your immune system preemptively to help fight off the germs and stay healthy with lots of vitamin C. Eating an orange or grabbing a freshly squeezed juice is an easy way to get a boost of C, but there are other foods like bell pepper, strawberries and pineapple that also have high levels of of the vitamin. You can also take a daily vitamin supplement (available at most drugstores) to make sure your immune system is in top shape.

This winter, try unplugging for a bit. We’re sure that some time spent away from your phone, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat will do you some good. You will be more present in the moment and able to enjoy the company of your friends and family without constantly checking your notifications or uploading pics. If you can’t bear it for a whole week or even a day, just give yourself one hour of tech-free time — we promise, you will feel more calm once you get over the initial panic.

And finally, when it comes to fashion and beauty, it wouldn’t be winter without some of our favorite festive nail colors. We love deep jewel tones, metallics and sparkles for special occasions and you can never go wrong with a classic dark red. Use this season to play around with new colors and compliment holiday party outfits. Having the perfect manicure will keep your hands in top shape and can help pull together an outfit. They are also sure to keep your spirits up even as temperatures continue to fall.
