This Is Why Your Favorite Ring Turned Your Finger Green

And how to avoid it in the future.

The sun is coming out, which means the (winter) gloves are off and the rings are on. But before you start stacking on your bejewelled jewelry with abandon, we thought we'd take a moment to explain why some of your fingers may, at this very moment, risk getting a greenish hue.

We’ve all fallen victim to buying a ring and wearing it to death – one of our writers cited a beloved H&M Céline knock-off – only to discover that, after a few days (sometimes it only takes one), it’s tinted our fingers a shade that MAC would probs call "Windows Desktop Background Green." Unfortunately, the answer as to why this happens isn’t black and white. The culprit is usually metals like copper and nickel composites reacting to proximate chemicals, but discoloration can also be caused by precious metals like sterling silver and gold when they oxidize.

After staying in close contact with your acidic skin all day, some metals experience a chemical reaction that causes it to change color, and even stain your finger in the process. It’s also possible they’re having a reaction to a lotion or perfume you’re wearing, but we prefer the former because it feels very X-Men

Fortunately, the solution to fighting the Salad Fingers aesthetic is easy – we call it the Go Big or Go Home philosophy: either you can go big by investing in stable, stainless steel and gold pieces that won’t change color (especially if you polish them regularly), or you can go home and coat your jewelry in a layer of clear nail polish that will form a barrier between the metal and anything that might react to it, thus avoiding the risk of staining.
