5 Completely Different Types Of French Girl Style

Are you chic or cool?

share with your friends
We love French girl style. We love that hard-to-describe, effortless, sexy, smouldering attitude that your typical Parisian (in particular) exudes – but there’s a reason there’s so much je ne sais quoi surrounding France’s females: there are so many nuances to their style.

Ask your friends, ask your mom, then ask yourself: what is French girl style? You might find you get a variety of different answers, depending on whether you look to the Nouvelle Vague or Dior's New Look for reference. We’ve broken down the clichés into five different categories to better understand style à la française.

Which type of French girl are you? Check out how we've broken down the style into its 5 main sub-genres:

Too cool for ecole

This mid-century style is the aesthetic equivalent of a shoulder shrug and an elongated exclamation of “baaaaaaaaaah, non,” demonstrated here by OG DGAF French girl, Françoise Hardy. It’s all tough jackets and tees tucked into perfectly tailored pants – whether they’re jeans or something more elaborate is up to you (or, more specifically, whatever you grab first from the floor your arty loft in the 20th arrondissement). The trick to this style is taking typically baggy, boyfriend-style pieces and wearing them – breakthrough – in the correct size for a slick, but still cool, finish.

smart and styling

The hair says "I woke up like this," the outfit says "I have my tailor on speed-dial." This is your classic Business Parisian ensemble and it’s hard to fault. Combine sleek, contemporary accessories with sharp, staple clothing and you’ve basically got it. We advise investing in a tape measure to ensure everything hits at the perfect height: the hem of the jacket just below your hips, the cuffs of your jeans exposing the perfect amount of recently polished shoe. The real secret to this look exists entirely within the hair: a slightly mussy mane is the difference between effortlessly stylish and severe.

Chic casual

There is a subtle difference between the chic casual and nonchalant cool styles: while the former plays up masculine elements for a tough-guy attitude, the former ups the flirtation with romantic details – but don’t be mistaken in thinking this is style is evening-appropriate. This is the quintessential weekend-in-Paris look. The foundations are simple, a blouse and jeans, but it’s the cuts and accessories that elevate it: balance out a deep-plunge neckline with long sleeves and ankle-length pants to keep it classy. Strappy sandals are a great way to reference the skin on display up top without over-doing it. Add a chic necklace (or two) to break up the area of exposed chest. This look also works well with a lace bralette layered underneath.

Classic Cuts

The beret. The tea dress. The razor-sharp shades. It’s an outfit formula that will never get old, especially because it is one that can be re-worked to keep up with the times. This season, opt for a bold print for your dress: think polka dotshumbug stripes or a mature floral pattern à la Lana Del Rey. Throw in some colorful – but coordinating – accessories and you’re ready to hit the bistro for a morning of café allongés and people-watching.

Parisienne 2.0

While, in our experience, the classic French girl stereotypes do have legs to stand on, there is a new generation of Parisians who are redefining the city’s dress code. They’re shaking off the muted color palette of black, black, navy and black and are instead reaching for fiery reds and even hotter pinks. They’re not afraid to incorporate contemporary trends and international influences. Just look at the effect of Paris-born cult brand Vetements on the fashion scene: its early designs riffed on the youthful energy coming from the city and the blogosphere still can’t get enough of it.
