What To Wear When You Have An Audience With Royalty

A look that's fit for a queen.

It was a Monday like any other at WTG when one of our editors casually mentioned that she was meeting Kate Middleton soon, and asked the team what should she wear. Naturally, the office exploded into a frenzy of excitement, with everyone recommending pieces from chic, floral dresses that wouldn’t look out of place at a horse race, to a Spice Girls-inspired ensemble that oozes British eccentricity. Two themes became immediately apparent: Topshop and Gucci. It was almost unanimous advice that, given the international setting of a meet-and-greet with British royalty on French soil, the outfit should be a mish-mash of references from each culture, but also something that would be not only appropriate to wear in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but subtle nods to them.

It has been a hot topic at WTG HQ all week, and one we have decided to set in stone. Check out our editorial team's advice about what to wear when you have an audience with royalty, plus their hand-picked selections of pieces that are fit for a queen (or, as the case may be, Duchess).

Editor-in-Chief Amanda says: My suggestion to you would be to go all-out Ascot on this event. This is British royalty we're talking about, so you should approach this outfit with the same kind of hat-toting elegance as any well-heeled Brit would for the ultimate aristocratic event of the year. For a look that screams "excellence in Franco-British relations," make that hat a beret: what says cultural integration better than a Londoner in iconic French headgear? And look no further than Topshop Unique's latest collection to complete the look: I know you were digging those Madchester vibes, but I'd advise instead to consider the Aster Shift Dress, a floral, feminine look fit for an off-duty Duchess. For footwear, you've already got the perfect open-back heels. Let those feet breathe in case you get so excited your feet start to sweat.

Contributor Kirsti says: This sleek jumpsuit is a modern adaptation on the traditional pantsuit, but the advantage is that you only have to buy one piece, saving you some dollah! Add a touch of bling to your hair to amp-up the richness, and finish the outfit with a timeless blazer incase you get nervous chills when meeting Kate.

Editor MaryFrances says:
This look is all about power-clashing, so mix up a Mel B cheetah print top with a Gerri Halliwell plaid skirt, and, finally, some black lucite heels that I could totally see on Posh Spice.

Photographer Diana says:
Show Kate that you've been paying attention to her sartorial moves with an elegant dark blue blazer cape: a modern take on her oft-sported skirt-and-jacket combo. Then, you can add a pop of color with this heart-collar dress shirt that is proper without being too prim – and shows off your heart eyes more fashionably than an emoji tee. Finish the look off with a pair of blue velvet boots that would scream "London underground" if not for the streamlined ensemble, and you've got yourself an outfit that shows off your everlasting appreciation for the princess and your ability to mix posh with punk.

Assistant Market Editor Thus says:
It's always good to have meaning behind your outfit, and nothing is more regal than blue. This dress is the perfect length for a royal audience, and I've paired it with a tailored, white coat to get a clean and sharp finish. Plus, it‘s a great piece of outerwear for spring — a blank canvas with which to mix any of summery outfit. I chose these Zara pumps because they will elongate your legs and they're super versatile for pairing with other outfits after this one. Lastly, I highly recommend gold jewelry to accessorize because there's nothing more royal than gold.
