Trends are forever coming back around full circle, and this season, signature grunge looks from the '90s, '70s-style flares and power shoulders from the '80s are back in the limelight. While some of us are too young to remember these trends the first time around, there's still a sure-fire way to get the original look.

When I was growing up, my mother had two closets: one, she used daily for her everyday and workwear. The other was filled with all her old clothes from decades gone-by that she simply couldn't bear to part with. Rummaging through that second closet for cool things to dress up in was like finding the door to Narnia. While my mother never wore those clothes, I was still too young to appreciate them. But now it's a different story. Now I see the collection for the treasure trove it really is: a bulging portal of true vintage pieces that are simply gathering dust, when they could instead be given a new lease of life and be kept in the family.

Here's my roundup of the types of decade-defining pieces I found in my mom's closet that you might find in your mom's, too. Layer any one of these items into your look to create a righteous, runway-ready ensemble:

The pussybow came into its own in the '40s and '50s with a quick resurgence in the '80s as well. It was a the preferred style of controversial British politician Margaret Thatcher, and more recently it's been sported by Ivanka Trump. But don't let that put you off, this season, Clare Waight Keller sent out many pussybow blouses and dresses onto the runway for her final Chloé collection, and over at Gucci we saw plenty of Alessandro Michele's now-signature takes on the trend. You can style yours like a pro by layering pussybow blouses under sleeveless, leather dresses with a nostalgia-tinged palette of browns, yellows and oranges.

When it comes to power-dressing, the '80s clearly comes up trumps – and the shoulder pad became the defining detail of the era. This year, everyone on the FW17 schedule agreed that the accentuated shoulder is back: Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga and Céline all sent an army of built-up, squared-off jackets down the runway. Complimented by crisply cut, pointed lapels and double-breasted closures, the shoulder pad jacket is the ultimate way to say hello to statement dressing with an introverted voice. While other statement pieces call for bright colors or eccentric designs, the shoulder pad jacket looks flawless in neutral or dark tones and requires minimal styling. Let your outerwear do the talking by keeping the rest of your outfit low-key – and don’t be afraid to add some on-trend decorative details such as long fringing or cascading chains (with mom's permission of course).

Wide-leg pants have been around for a while now and they only seem to be getting wider. Whether it’s a full wide leg or a flare that begins at the knee, your mom is bound to have a few pairs kicking around. This season, we've seen wide pants with a utilitarian, oversized turn up à la Zimmermann, and with dropped waists on pleated pants at Chloé. Give your mom's pair of vintage flares a modern update by styling them with long-sleeved tops and ultra pointy, mid-length boots for a high-fashion look.

It might be spring but it’s not that hot yet. The FW17 runways were littered with fur, getting us in the mood for fall already. Your mom is bound to have a fuzzy little number hidden in the back of the closet, be it faux or real (and there's certainly less guilt about vintage fur). Miu Miu styled their chunky, checked, fur coats with long leather boots and matching furry baker boy caps, while Michael Kors styled his cropped jackets with bodycon dresses and the longer designs with oversized roll neck pullovers. For a more wearable version this spring, try pairing a cropped fur bolero with a statement tee and some fashion luxe sneakers for a streetwear-inspired look.
