Amp Up Your Fall Closet With Style Cues From The VMA Red Carpet

From feathers to combat boots.

The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards went off without a hitch last night. As one would expect from a show that has seen Miley Cyrus twerking in nude latex, Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift's acceptance speech and Britney Spears dancing with a python, there were some jaw-dropping moments.

In particular, this year's event featured Jared Leto donning a blue sequin cape, the highly-anticipated release of the music video for Taylor Swift's new single, Look What You Made Me Do, the shortest acceptance speech in history from Ed Sheeran, who won Artist of the Year and some major shade thrown at ex-Fifth Harmony member, Camila Cabello.

As seems to be becoming the norm at high-profile events, things took a political turn when Ke$ha gave a speech on suicide prevention, transgender members of the military walked the red carpet in the wake of Trump's ban and Paris Jackson spoke out against white supremacy in the aftermath of Charlottesville. It was a particularly pertinent and moving moment when Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer who was killed in Charlottesville, presented the award for Best Fight Against The System. This year it was shared out between five winners, whose music covers various topics from supporting the LGBTQ community to promoting positive body image and standing up to racism.

In terms of winners, Kendrick Lamar took home the most silver spacemen, sweeping six categories including the coveted Video of the Year award.

However, as per usual, we concerned ourselves most with red carpet fashion – and what a night it was! While we don't have any glamorous red carpet events coming up on our calendars (for the time being), there's no reason why we can't take a few style cues from the A-lister's awards ceremony outfits to up our game this fall.

From slick '70s style to feathers fit-for-a-princess, check out 5 looks from the VMAs to inspire your fall outfits:

Plunging Jumpsuits

Whether you want to make a statement in the office (with a ruffled, pussybow blouse layered underneath, of course) or dazzle on the dance floor in a glistening, '70s-style, wide-leg one-piece, take note of how Hailey Baldwin accentuated her exposed skin with the tiniest choker necklace and the biggest hoop earrings

Combat Boots

Millie Bobby Brown's style has been killing it lately – we loved her offbeat yellow look at the Teen Choice Awards earlier this month, and this too-cool-for-school tiered tulle dress with gunmetal polka dots styled with a pair of polished combat boots is another winner. The footwear in particular will make a great addition to any fall look book: the soles are deliciously thick so you won't feel the chill from the ground as the temperature drops, plus they give off some serious attitude when styled with distressed denim and your best resting bitch face on your morning commute.

Mustard Yellow

After a long summer of juicy bursts of lemon infiltrating every fashionista's closet, it was inevitable that mustard was going to succeed it as the go-to shade of yellow for fall, and Yara Shahidi agrees. With all the '70s trends we've seen so far this season, we bet a dash of mustard will go a long way in your cold-weather closet.

Harem Pants

We didn't used to think much of harem pants until Demi Lovato stepped out in this bedazzled design. We love how the sequins glistened in the light – so much so that we barely noticed the former Disney star's free-flying nipples! What could be better for cozy autumn evenings than a pair of baggy, yet defined, pants?

Feathers

Trust Lorde to steal the show: the singer swanned up to the awards in a lilac ball gown whose entire skirt was made up of (what looks like) ostrich feathers. We are absolutely blown away by the combination of the seriously simple color palette and the luxe texture of those tumbling feathers – perfect for jazzing up any evening look.
