This Is How French Girls Keep Their Sneakers White

Tricks to make your sneakers sparkle.

Something miraculous has happened in the City of Light.  Somehow, over the course of the past few years, the poster-child Parisienne has become a woman not only clad in Burberry trenches and Breton stripes; she's also become a bonafide sneaker head (i.e. the reign of Adidas' Stan Smith ). What we love most about the French affinity for sneakers is the versatility it embraces. Rock a pair of bright white Nikes with a pantsuit or a sundress; style yourself chic and comfortable in a pair of leather tennies for brunch, a job interview, a wake, etc. However, with so much wear and tear, keeping your sneaks fresh is a must — so we've sought advice from our editorial team and best Parisian pals on how to keep your kicks happy with simple cleaning-hacks

Scroll to the bottom to shop 10 sneakers with wardrobe-staple potential.

Disinfectant/Bleach Wipes

Perfect for when you're on the run or in a time-crunch. Disinfectant wipes are a no-fail way to cleaner kicks, although you'll want to avoid using them on suede sneakers and be cautious of wipes with a high bleach content (you risk distressing any leather on the shoe).

Tape

Think of this as a DIY lint-roller for your more high-maintenance pairs, i.e. matte suede sneakers that seem to collect impossible amounts of odd fuzz and city brambles.

Toothpaste

Apply a non-gel based toothpaste (i.e. Arm and Hammer brand) with bleach to a toothbrush to gently massage and rinse the stains away. Our favorite part about this trick, other than getting to treat our shoe like an actual baby, is how well the brush will clean out any weird grooves and crevices.

Windex

Spoiler alert: even if you don't have any Ajax, baking soda, or bleach wipes hanging around your abode, you can just as well reach for the Windex (note: do not spray directly onto the shoe, but rather onto a damp cloth).

Into the Wash

And when it comes to canvas sneakers? Remove the shoes' laces, place them in a delicates bag and then toss everything in the wash. Be sure to pick a gentle heat and speed.
