Despite their origins as lightweight outerwear for army officers during the two World Wars, trench coats took the fashion world by storm as soon as they emerged from the battlefields – who could forget the now-iconic design Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast At Tiffany’s, or Catherine Deneuve’s on-point French-girl styling in Les Parapluies de Cherbourg

Of course, when we think of the classic trench, we think of Burberry. The brand has held a cultural sway over the style since its beginning, when Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a light, waterproof twill that was emblematic of the very first coats. But it’s 2017, and the trench is universally loved by everyone from luxurious fashion houses to high street brands (or sometimes a combination of both: check out Uniqlo and JW Anderson’s recent Brit-inspired collab). If you’ve been lusting after fall’s ultimate, timeless coat, we have good news: it doesn’t have to involve dropping two months of rent on a plaid-lined Burberry number.

Truth is, when it comes to finding your perfect trench, the brand name is secondary. Instead, it’s about sifting through the style’s numerous variations in order to find the design that best complements your particular look. If you’re for searching a classic coat in a stylish neutral that’ll go with everything, pay close attention to the shade. A light-brown khaki may be the traditional color, but depending on your skin tone, there may be neutrals that work even better with your coloring – a richer camel, for example, or a classy light gray. Also, you’ll want to make sure that the trench is hitting at the right length: mid-thigh looks easy-breezy, but if you want all eyes on you as you stroll into a café, a longer, calf-grazing style will create a beautiful silhouette.

Although trenches were first designed using exclusively waterproof fabrics, you’ll now find a myriad of textures to pick and choose from. Once again, depending on your personal style, Burberry’s classic gabardine may not be the look for you. Rather, try out different fabrics: wool for a cozy and structured finish, linen for earthiness and breathability, or even more experimental textures like supple suede and badass vinyl for that high-fashion touch. Remember, a fabric can completely transform the shape of a piece, and thus your silhouette while wearing it. This will also determine if you should buy slightly oversized: a flowy material will look more flattering if worn slightly loose around the body, whereas a stiffer texture should be fitted.
