These Styling Tips Make Everyday Avant Garde Easy

Hacks inspired by the 2017 Met Gala.

The 2017 Met Gala may be over, but we're still taking notes from fashion's favorite night to play dress-up. This year's event payed homage to Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, which meant plenty of larger-than-life, avant garde outfits and no shortage of inspiration for us to take more risks with our own wardrobe.

The key to getting an artier-than-thou look? You can make like Rihanna and become a beautiful barnacle, or take a cue from Claire Danes and feed your blouse through a paper shredder (in the best way).  But for the fashionista looking to take baby-steps into the avant garde, we suggest a few simple styling tricks from some of our favorite attendees' looks.

Check out 5 simple styling tips to add a dash of je-ne-sais-quoi to any outfit:

The Bleached Brow Effect

Claire Danes' deconstructed white blouse (by up-and-coming American brand, Monse) may have stolen the show, but the actress also rocked a fierce "bleached" brow that is easy to achieve through a quick dusting of pearly eyeshadow. Shoutout to Dree Hemingway, who also went for the frosted-brow effect – dare we say we spot a trend?

Le French Touch: The Beret

French actress Isabelle Huppert was repping her homeland at the gala in a jauntily-placed leather beret (watch your back, Riri); we love the way she paired the classic hat with a more formal ensemble.

Space-Age Collars

Ruth Negga dazzled in a Valentino look that was somewhere between expensive table-runner and Star Trek glam. The avant garde take-away from this ensemble? A minimalist, high collar.

Jewlery-laden Locks

Lace a charm necklace into your locks for a look that's simultaneously futuristic and reminiscent of some completely alien past (but also future) – like Star Wars. As best described by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen at this year's gala.

The Eyes Have It

Jemima Kirke let her eyes do the talking with a makeup look that brought to mind some of our favorites from fashion month (cue Margiela). Go all-out like Kirke with both yellow and fuchsia eyeshadows, or pick a single Starburst shade to highlight the inner or outer corners of your eyes.
