How Many Of These French Celebrities Can You Name?

Hint: none of them are Marion Cotillard.

share with your friends
From Jeanne Damas' effortless, cool-girl-à-la-parisienne style to Audrey Tautou's quirky charms in Amélie, it's clear that we can't resist that French-girl je ne sais quoi. And thanks to Hollywood's habit of taking French celebrities from their domestic industries and turning them into international superstars, even those of us who aren't experts in the culture have been exposed to talents such as Clémence Poésy in Harry Potter and Léa Seydoux in Midnight in Paris. Even if you don't speak a word of the language, you can learn how to be Parisian from Caroline de Maigret and sing along to the music of Christine and the Queens

But beyond that cherry-picked handful of French talent is an entirely different cast of talented celebrities who are producing music, making movies and storming the runway, and we have no idea who they are! If you consider yourself a francophile, make sure you stay au courant (that's French for "in the know") with the ever-growing list of names who we're sure will soon find international fame – at which point you can boast about how you've been following their career from the start. De rien ("you're welcome").

Cindy Bruna

Although you might not be familiar with her name, Cindy Bruna has been a runway favorite for years now, modeling for brands like Jean-Pierre Gaultier, Balmain and Elie Saab – not to mention being cast multiple times in the prestigious Victoria Secret runway show. Discovered on a beach – where else? – in the South of France, she quickly gained renown as a model. In 2012, she was the first black woman (she's of mixed Congolese and Italian descent) to book an exclusive contract with Calvin Klein, and she was featured on the cover of Vogue Italia's 50th anniversary issue. Of course, her model-off-duty looks are the epitome of French-girl chic, with an extra hint of sexiness: black bombers, slip dresses and, occasionally, a statement pant.

Juliette Armanet

Juliette Armanet may be a newcomer to the French music scene (her first album, Petite Amie, was released earlier this year), but she's already been hailed as the one of the most talented musicians to bring back la chanson française, a musical genre that emphasizes the French poetic and literary tradition in its lyrics. A singer-songwriter-pianist who evokes an stirring musicality through her piercing lyrics and her nuanced, emotional delivery, this is a French musician to add to your playlist of Charlotte Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy gems. Her tour style consists of delicate printed blouses and cozy sweaters, often in a blush pink or fire-engine red.

Estelle Chen

Scouted in her hometown of Paris, Estelle Chen went on to win the prestigious Elite Model Look competition in France in 2013, joining the ranks of participating powerhouses like Cindy Crawford and Alessandra Ambrosio. Since then, she's walked for numerous fashion houses including Louis Vuitton, Chloé and Dior, and will make her debut on the Victoria Secret runway later this year. As a model of color, she's spoken about the difficulty of booking shows when there are only a few slots available to Asian women, but feels that the industry is slowly becoming more diverse, citing the casting the upcoming Victoria Secret show as an example. Her favorite off-duty looks include the perfect oversized moto jacket (a French-girl favorite) as well as casual streetwear in the form of graphic sweatshirts and the perfect Louis Vuitton crossbody bag, of course.

Marine Vacth

Marine Vacth began her career as a model after being scouted in a H&M store, landing notable campaigns with brands such as Yves Saint Laurent (she was the face of their perfume, "Parisienne") and See by Chloé. However, she began acting at the age of 20, and received a César nomination (basically a French Oscar) merely two years after her entry into the profession for her portrayal of a teenage prostitute in the film Young & Beautiful, directed by François Ozon. Since this breakout role, she has appeared in several other French productions and worked with the same director on Amant Double, which debuted this year at Cannes and was nominated for multiple awards at the film festival. An up-and-coming star of French cinema with a minimalist and elegant style, this is one actress to have on your radar.

astrid Berges-Frisbey

Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey may look like the gorgeous French-girl-of-your-dreams – with a stylish name to boot. But this actress is more than meets the eye. After getting her start on French television, she quickly landed her first English-speaking role in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She also starred in the Spanish film Sex of Angels (she is of Spanish-French origin), and learned Italian when starring in Alaska. In her most recent role, she appeared opposite Jude Law in the fantasy feature-length production of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Her red-carpet looks include many polished ensembles courtesy of Chanel, and a little splash of fairy-tale tulle here and there.
