Cozy home hacks.

share with your friends
A new school semester is just around the corner, and while we've already refreshed out makeup kit with classroom-approved beauty products and, of course, picked up way too many pairs of on-campus footwear, there is one aspect of heading off to college that is almost as important to consider as our back-to-school closet: dorm room decor.

Spruce up that mundane freshman dorm with a few quick, easy and, most importantly, student budget-friendly decorating ideas! From hanging a picture frame that reminds you of home, to breathing life into the room with some much-needed foliage, follow our guide to making the most of your space during term time.

Check out 5 on-trend dorm room decor tips you need to know before you start college:

Get A Succulent

Freshen up your room with an easy-to-care for succulent. Not only will a miniature green plant seriously up your IG backdrop game, but they require minimal watering, making them a no-brainer for any busy student schedule. Pick up an aloe vera, whose pointed leaves you can ooze cooling gel out of to calm and soothe your skin, or a cute sedum cuspidatum with pink-tinged edges to add an extra splash of color. What's more is you can plant them in all sorts of pots to tie in with the rest of your interior!

Invest In Quality Sheets

You're going to be spending a lot of time curled up in these bad boys, so don't skimp on quality! The lower the thread count, the itchier and less comfortable the sheets are going to be. Opt for a soft-as-marshmallow, breathable bed set with a minimum thread count of 400 – and make sure it's made of cotton (or silk if you can afford it!), not polyester, unless you're really into waking up drenched in sweat. Treat yourself to a funky, durable design that will keep you warm, especially through the first semester.

Hang A String Of Lights

You're going to be spending a lot of time under the harsh fluorescent bulbs of classrooms, the cafeteria and your dorm, which is why we recommend a softer alternative light source to wind down with. A string of fairy lights is inexpensive, cute and will make it feel like the Holidays all year round! Hang a few rows above your bed and maybe even attach photos with colored pegs or thread to transform your lights into a statement piece of wall decor.

Buy A Candle

Dorm rooms are not inherently a place to relax, so it's important to make yours feel as cozy as possible. Catching a whiff of a scented candle that you love or that reminds you of home will instantly help the stress melt away, even on a particularly hectic day. Plus, it'll serve the dual purpose of added light and ridding the vicinity of common dorm odours (namely, BO and whatever your roommate just heated up in the microwave).

Don't Forget A Picture Frame

Whether it's your mom, your high school BFF or your furry BFF, you'll want something to remind you of life at home – especially during the first few weeks. A picture frame containing a print of your favorite people  will not only add a splash of color to your night stand or wall, but it will help with homesickness. Opt for a classic design in a cute color like rose gold, or show off your funky side with an offbeat style like a quadruple Polaroid frame!
