Elevate Any Outfit With These Street Style-Approved Accessories

Make every street a runway.

share with your friends
"The best fashion show is definitely on the street. Always has been, always will be." These immortal words were uttered by one of fashion's greatest street photographers, Bill Cunningham, and if the best fashion show is always on the street, it's the accessories that make the performance worth watching. From sparkling ruby-red heels that Dorothy would approve of, paired with sweat socks to cross-body bags in all sorts of ambitious shapes, we all know that rocking a street style look worthy of being photographed means getting not just your outfit, but also your hats, shoes, earrings and glasses on point.

As the streets of Paris, New York, London and Milan were overrun by the fashion elite this past month, we've been following along not just on the runway, but on the street scene, and looking out for the hottest trends as worn by industry insiders. Last year, it was Off-White's statement yellow belt and adorable mini-bags that dominated the circuit. But what accessories have the models, editors and other FROW stars fallen in love with this season?

Check out our 4 favorite trending accessories that we spotted outside the shows, and how you can incorporate them into your own wardrobe post-fashion month:

Newsboy caps

Move over, beret, the newsboy cap has taken over as the fashion set's headwear of choice. These caps come in all styles and fabrics: from Burberry-inspired plaid to fire-engine red, so choose one that will vibe with your existing wardrobe. We love pairing this piece with vintage-inspired looks, like a simple t-shirt and blue jeans with a subtle flare, or with classic outerwear like a trench or oversized coat. This hat is so versatile that it'll class up anything you pair it with – in Romee Strijd's case, it was red-hot leggings and white go-go girl boots.

Colorful Arm Candy

We spotted our fair share of structured, geometric bags this season, but what really drew our attention was the number of attendees rocking colorful, graphic clutches and handbags. Along with the cross-body, it isn't surprising that this style has become a darling of the street-style circuit: it's compact, easy to wield and perfect for storing show invites. As with most eye-catching accessories, you can either juxtapose it against a more neutral outfit as a statement piece, or use it to add the finishing touch to a vibrant look. Or do both – the composed look will be more suitable for a job interview, and you can rock your striped dress to Sunday brunch with the girls (bonus: it will serve as the perfect addition to any Insta Story).

Tinted Sunglasses

Tinted sunglasses have come back in full force this past year, thanks in large part to Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner's undying love for colorful specs. Despite the plummeting temperatures, we saw a continuation of the trend on the ready-to-wear streets this September. If Eva Chen's head-to-toe orange outfit is too much for you, try pairing your colorful sunnies with a graphic tee for that throwback '90s R&B vibe or rocking them with a Canadian tuxedo, because everything goes with denim. But one thing is for sure, this is a show-stopping accent that'll add that extra oomph to any outfit.

Pointy-toed Heels

Dior's J'ADIOR kitten heels instantly because a street style staple when they dropped for SS17, but it wasn't just this pointed-toe kitten heel in particular that was storming the pavement this season. From dainty sling-backs to ankle boots that were stylishly tapered at the front, it's clear why fashion's elite love wearing this look to the shows: not only does a pointy toe elongate the silhouette, it's the perfect subtle, ultra-feminine detail that adds elegance and polish to any look. Whether your heel of choice is a pair of Balenciaga-inspired sock boots or classic leather ankle booties, this is the shape to don when you want all eyes on you. For a sexy, Saint Laurent vibe, try wearing them with fitted leather pants, but if you're more of an Audrey Hepburn kind of gal, a knee-length skirt or midi dress will give you a graceful, timeless charm.
