How To Soften Strong Cheekbones With Easy Beauty Hacks

Show your soft side.

share with your friends
If genetics decided to bestow you with naturally strong, pronounced cheekbones and jaws but sometimes you'd rather show your softer side, makeup can help you go from angular to oval with the flick of a wrist (though, in this case, your magic wand is a foundation brush). With just a few simple tips and the right products, you can soften the appearance of your face shape while maintaining a natural beauty finish. Plus, we've added a few hairstyle tips that'll bring the entire look together.

Check out our top tips for reducing angular features with makeup, without looking made-up:

Get Your Foundations Right

Foundation should be invisible. The wrong foundation is the biggest giveaway that you're trying to cover something up. Your makeup base should not be a thick layer of unnatural color, but should match your skin exactly, balancing any unevenness and blurring – not caking – any blemishes. There is a lot to be said for trying a few different swabs of foundation on the inner side of your wrist and then checking the result in natural light before you buy. Leave the trompe-l'œil artistry up to the highlighting and contouring.

When it comes to applying your foundation, dab a half-pea-sized amount on your forehead, each cheek, nose bridge and chin. Use a foundation brush to smooth the product into your skin using outward, sweeping movements. You may have to use your fingertips to ensure it blends into the hairline and under the neck invisibly. Wait until the skin is dry, then repeat if necessary.

Contour Like A Queen

How did we ever do without it? Previously believed to belong only to certain celebrities' not-so-subtle cosmetics kits, both contouring (using a darker color to create shadow) and highlighting (using a light color to reflect) can easily be used in a regular makeup look to minimize certain angles of the face.

Using a sculpting brush and a foundation two to three shades darker than your natural skin tone, buff the color in a crescent moon curve over the bottom edges of your jaw. Work this very subtly up towards the temples, ensuring the color is completely blended and invisible by the time you reach the top hairline. This will give the impression of a thinner, more oval-shaped face.

Highlight To Perfection

Now bring light to your beautiful face with some quick highlighting. To make your eyes appear wider and your face rounder, use a foundation one shade lighter than your base layer and gently blend in a triangle shape between your brows and down towards your nose. Highlighter or concealer can also be used to reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.

A sweep of shimmery blush along the apples of your cheeks will bring warmth and balance, but make sure you choose one that complements your skin's natural warm, neutral or cool undertone. Check the results outside (or near a window), as misleading indoor lighting can lead to over-application.

Focus On Your Favorites

While you might want to draw the attention away from your cheekbones and jaw, that doesn't mean you shouldn't showcase your best features! A strong lip or stand-out eye will also work to distract from your less-favored facial elements.

A smoky eye using warm, autumnal shades such as golden brown or deep plum is particularly complementary and feminine, while pointed black cat eye flicks can accentuate your angles (a bonus for some). On the lips, a creamy rich red is a go-to for anyone, but be careful when using lip liner, which should be ultra-discreet or the effect will look unnatural.

Hairs and Graces

Just as with your makeup, to soften the appearance of your face shape, avoid sharp haircuts and styles. There are plenty of options: from wispy bangs to waves and layers, your hair stylist can help you choose exactly the right cut to suit your face. Stay away from lengths that finish at the jawline, as well as block-ends (blunt bangs in particular) which will emphasize your face shape.

A honey-tinted balayage or chocolate lowlights can not only help soften your face, but also bring summertime youthfulness and radiance to your complexion. Again, the most flattering shades depend on your skin tone, so make sure you ask a stylist's opinion. There are plenty of hair apps that allow you to upload a photo and try different styles and colors – potentially a great help if you're unsure which direction to go in.
