The Ultimate Guide To Plus Size Sportswear

Because plus size beauties exercise too.

In general, the fashion industry tends to overlook the need for plus-sized athletic gear – as if nobody over a size 10 exercises! Finding the perfect workout pants that actually flatter your butt and thighs, or a sports bra that holds down what your mamma gave you, is no mean feat for any plus-sized woman.

Thankfully, and finally, Nike recently announced the launch of a new plus-sized athletic wear line, ideal for solving all your gym clothes dilemmas. The sports company might be pretty late to the game, but at least it's finally seen the light. A successful, forward-thinking campaign often paves the way for other international brands to follow suit. Here’s hoping Nike is the first in a series of proverbial style dominos to fall in the direction of inclusivity.

In the meantime, to take the stress out of dressing for the gym or that yoga class with the cute instructor, we’ve compiled the ultimate guide to plus-sized sportswear. Scouring the industry for the crème de la crème, we’ve only included brands that live up to what they intended to do. Forget mumsy, frumpy clothing that simply fits. Our list is full of pieces that not only fit like a glove but that look and feel great too.

Feeling good about yourself is absolutely key to a productive workout, so check out our favorite brands and treat yourself to some retail therapy before your next sweat sesh:

Of course, first on our list has got to be Nike. The new line carries sizes up to 3XL and most importantly is not simply the existing range in bigger sizes. Every curvy girl knows that doesn’t work, so Nike has taken into consideration that everyone’s weight distribution is different, that what works for one woman won’t necessarily work for another. It has also used genuinely plus-sized women to head up the campaign including influencers Grace Victory and Danielle Vanier. Some of the best pieces include streetwear-style sports luxe tops with mesh inserts, easy tanks with interesting side splits and awesome sports bras.

Lesser-known American brand Lola Getts has really hit the jackpot when it comes to understanding the plus-sized market. The company was created by a duo of women who noticed that it was the slender gym-goers who were kitted out in cute and funky athletic wear, while the curvier women were left to assemble outfits from men’s tees and plain, baggy sweats. Lola Getts does leggings like no other. Fitted with a special diamond-shaped crotch to avoid any horrendous camel toe, as well as flat lock seams to avoid chaffing and high-grade technological performance fabrics that smooth and lift, these are the kind of active wear leggings you’ve dreamed of! The brand also carries a small range of zip tops and tank tops along with a selection of compression yoga pants. If that wasn’t enough to convince you, to add incentive for those looking to slim down from their workouts, you'll get 20% off if you send back your old Lola Getts-branded clothes and order a smaller size. Talk about a win-win.

Full Beauty is less about high-performance fabrics and more about just looking cute. Although the designs are still smart and have sports in mind, it’s here you’ll find slogan tees, dip-dye zip-up jackets, multi-colored sneakers and so much more. The collections feature no-chafe seams, non-rolling waistbands – is there anything worse than a rolling waist band? – and carefully designed, colorblocked patterns to make you feel your very best self. Catering for sizes from S to 7XL, it also has a petite and a tall section. Our favorite Ghostbuster, Melissa McCarthy, is affiliated with the brand too, stocking her very own ready-to-wear collection alongside the brand's year-round sportswear line.

Over at Old Navy, it’s tees and tank tops all the way. Using "Go-Dry Technology" the tops are designed to wick sweat away so you stay dry during your work out, from start to finish. Made to fit snugly at the top and looser at the hips, they are the perfect workout wear for pear-shaped women – plus, you'll love the stylish collection of high-support bras in ultra-bright hues and graphic prints. None other than Ashley Graham has headed up campaigns for Old Navy, and if it's good enough for Ashley, it's good enough for us.
