This Is Not Your Average French-Girl Beret

Rock a beret, avoid the cliché.

Ask a French girl what she thinks of berets, and you’ll probably get a half-hearted “bof” (the sexier, pursed-lip version of “meh”), followed by some dispassionate remark about how they play into a cliched image of the country, baguette and all. But we all know that what one considers commonplace back home is often the very same quirk that scores major points abroad. So while many Parisians now equate wearing a beret to donning an “I <3 NY” tee for Manhattan folk, the French chapeau that has been sported by the likes of Edith Piaf and Brigitte Bardot has exploded in popularity overseas. From K-Pop groups rocking a rainbow of woolen headwear to street style regulars preening for that NYFW photo op, the beret – despite any Parisian chagrin – is here to stay.

French bohemians may have popularized this headgear during Les Années Folles, but the contemporary fashion world has since taken it upon itself to rework the wool. Marc Jacobs paraded bad-ass berets with grommet detailing on his FW15 runway, and Gucci’s SS16 collection took the headgear as far from its peasant origins as possible, creating then in luxurious black leather and quizzical striped-hemp

Dior echoed this sentiment with its dark fantasy FW17 collection, where all models were sent down the runway with black leather berets perched on top of their romantic waves. And Wanda Nylon had arguably the most fun out of them all, the brand's FW17 collection featuring berets in fluffy white, houndstooth and even calf fur fabrics.

This is, of course, the magic of the beret – it’s one of the few hats that can be endlessly reimagined (cat ears, anyone?) and adapted to all occasions, depending on if yours has pink sequins or is peppered with protest pins. Put a spin on the traditional by pairing a pastel design with bright, eye-catching details for the ultimate Japanese-girl kawaii, or draw the focus to your statement headwear with an understated blouse or off-the-shoulder shirt. And if you’re a fan of black all year round, try off-setting a Dior-esque lustre leather look with contrasting fabrics à la Rihanna. The beret has never left, but it’s now better than ever. Ready to rethink your stance on the French staple?
