Both formally a fashion faux pas, the legging and the sweatpant have both made a triumphant return to the spotlight in recent months. Celebs like Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez proved that it’s okay to wear leggings as pants, and brands such as Vetements and Victoria Beckham have made it clear that sweatpants can be high fashion, too – especially with piped detailing. 

The ubiquitous legging has long been a closet staple of even the most fashion-conscious shopper: before they made a comeback as acceptable pants in their own right, they were perfect for layering and, more importantly, lounging. Not to mention the workout benefits of a streamlined leg. Whereas the legging’s laid-back, baggy cousin, the sweatpant, has taken a little longer to convince the world of its day-to-day worth. 

At this point in time, it’s probably fair to say that everyone in the entire world owns one pair of leggings, and one pair of sweatpants. With the two so essential to a modern collection of basics, it’s also fair to say they’re in direct competition for the number one spot.
