The past few weeks have been a battlefield for bold color palettes: from sunburst reds, oranges and yellows to pink in every shade. But now that the summer season is drawing to a close, it looks like prints are stepping into the ring to compete for the spotlight. The fashion set has already gone mad for polka dots – thanks in part to a cult hit wrap shirt by Jacquemus – but as the temperature continues to drop and fall collections fill the shelves, the humble humbug stripe is making a case for itself as one of this season’s biggest, and certainly boldest, trends.

If you need ay more proof that thick, black-and-white stripes are going to be a big look this fall, just look at the FW17 runways: Marques ‘ Almeida has long been a supporter of a bold print, putting forward everything from gingham to houndstooth and chevron stripes over the past few years – oftentimes before anyone else. While the Tim Burton costume department pattern was a central theme of the London-based brand’s FW17 look book, Marques ‘ Almeida actually put it forward as a look for its 2016 collection, too.

This year, Balenciaga and Sonia Rykiel are among the other big-name labels to incorporate the style into their designs – and that’s just on the women’s runways. Mens Fashion Week was rife with stripes, too!

Personally, we’re loving the two-piece humbug pantsuits offered by the likes of Topshop and River Island. Tone down the Beetlejuice vibes (unless that’s what you’re going for) by off-setting the stripes with a bold pop of color, à la Balenciaga. Try a lime green mule or artfully clashing printed blouse for a real statement look. Alternatively, incorporate a two-tone element into a more pared-back look. Take style cues from The Atlantic Pacific’s Blair Eadie by layering a striped shirt under a blush pink blazer – thus adding a crisp, feminine touch and avoiding the 2008-era emo kid look.
