Banish Your Body Acne Before Bikini Season

In six simple steps.

Just when we thought pre-prom pimples were enough to worry about, now we’re sailing into bikini and backless-dress season – and the last thing we want is our summer outfits ruined by unsightly bacne (or wherever those pesky spots tend to pop up). Facial acne and body acne may be caused by the same excess of oil and dead skin cells clogging up the hair follicle. However, when it comes to treating body acne, which tends to be more stubborn due to the variety of aggravating oils and fabrics that come into regular contact with the skin, we need a slightly different plan of attack.

We've compiled six simple steps that you can follow to rid your body of blemishes so you can embrace showing off some skin this summer with confidence. Finally, you can slip into that backless one-piece without thinking twice.

Want to banish body acne once and for all? Incorporate these simple steps into your lifestyle and you’ll have clearer skin in no time:

SHOWER IT OFF

The first step to treating body acne is to soap off all the dirt, sweat and bacteria that you accumulate throughout the day. After washing and conditioning your hair (and making sure that excess conditioner isn’t dripping down your back), use a body cleanser that contains acne-fighting salicylic acid. This order is crucial so that the cleanser can wash away oils left over from previous products, too. Lather up regularly, at least once a day and as soon as possible after you work out. You can also exfoliate twice a week with an exfoliating gel, but be very gentle – overzealous scrubbing will aggravate and worsen the acne. Simply apply all products using your hands: shower loofahs are a prime breeding spot for bacteria.

MOISTURIZE & SPOT TREAT

After your body is squeaky-clean, it’s time to go in with another layer of product so that the acne-fighting ingredients really penetrate the skin barrier. Since anti-acne body washes can be drying to the skin, start by applying a moisturizer that also contains salicylic acid (not benzoyl peroxide – it’ll stain your clothes) to your trouble areas. Then, use a spot treatment to target your most obvious, inflamed culprits. If the skin on your body doesn’t dry out easily, you can also try an anti-acne body spray – especially helpful for those hard-to-reach spots on your back.

DON’T FORGET YOUR FABRICS

One thing that separates face acne and body acne is the fact that our bodies are constantly rubbing up against clothes. To prevent further breakouts, make sure all fabrics touching your skin are well-laundered – this includes everything from T-shirts to your sheets and bedspread. When washing, use a fragrance-free laundry detergent and switch out your fabric softeners and dryer sheets for a chemical-free dryer ball to prevent the introduction of pore-clogging agents into your wardrobe.

GYM SMART

Lingering sweat plus tight gym clothes is the perfect recipe for body acne – so fight back with these preventative measures. If you can’t shower immediately after working out, remove your sweaty sports bra and leggings and go over your skin with an oil- and fragrance-free cleansing wipe – or even better, a salicylic acid (spotting a theme here?) wipe. Then change into a fresh batch of clean, non-clingy clothes so that your skin can breathe – this will tide you over until you can head home to shower.

SCARS BE GONE

If your acne is receding, but leaving behind dark marks or other types of scarring in its wake, it’s imperative to treat it immediately before the scars deepen. For milder cases, over-the-counter topical creams and serums rich in antioxidants can heal the skin by promoting cell turnover and collagen production. These types of serums can increase sensitivity to the sun, so remember to apply sunscreen after letting the product sink in. You can also cover up the remnants of any body acne with a light application of foundation or even your to-go summer BB cream. Just test the tint on your skin (you may have to go a shade darker than what you use for your face), apply by gently dabbing with your fingers or a beauty blender and seal the makeup with a dusting of translucent powder.

CONSULT A DERM

If you’ve stuck faithfully to these techniques still see no improvement, it’s time to book a consultation with a dermatologist. A professional will be able to give you a personalized assessment of your skin and prescribe any additional treatments needed (oral medications, blue light therapy, chemical peels or laser resurfacing for acne scars, etc.). But don’t wait – the more you let your acne linger, the more work it becomes to treat.
