Gone are the days when being a nerd meant hiding out in classrooms during lunchtime with the rest of your Math Olympiad buddies. It's 2017, and between computer science-savvy Karlie Kloss, bookworm Emma Watson and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, we're happy to see that hitting the books is just as valued as being at all the right afterparties. But just because we love coding doesn't mean that our outfits need to be a carbon copies of Mark Zuckerberg's techie uniform. We wouldn't settle for mediocrity in our work, so why would we ever settle for less when it comes to style – especially when dressing up has actually been proven to boost our brain power?

Of course, nerd chic isn't a one-size-fits-all formula (after all, there are many ways to let your nerd flag fly). If you're more the Blair-Waldorf-East-Coast-Prep-School type, take a leaf out of her book by pairing polished plaids with crisp, structured fabrics, like a girl-boss power blazer – and don't forget your beret. But you prefer a low-key, library-ready look like Sam in Perks of Being A Wallflower, fill your fall closet with playful knits. Look out for details like bold stripes and jewel embellishments for that extra pop of color, and comfortable yet stylish flats (we hear loafers are one of fall's must-have shoes). Don't forget to invest in the perfect study cover-ups: a scarf so soft it could double as a blanket (or vice-versa, à la Lenny Kravitz circa 2012) and a stylish cardigan or jacket to keep you warm in those air-conditioned study spaces. And the last thing you need before heading out to class? A cute backpack that's spacious enough to fit all your back-to-school gear.

From the perfect study outfit to the gorgeous planner that'll keep you organized, here's everything you'll need to start the year on a stylish note – even if you are a self-proclaimed nerd:
