A French Girl's Guide To Getting Through The Seasons In Style

Late-summer must-haves.

When the temperatures drop to 60 degrees in mid-August and we’re assailed by the dull pitter-patter of interminable drizzle, everyone is searching for that perfect in-between-season closet solution. Whether you’re scouring the Resort and Pre-Fall runway collections for sartorial inspo or have decided to pair a wool beret with all your button-down dresses in an attempt to make them more weather-appropriate, these last few weeks of summer can be the trickiest to dress for.

Who better to turn to for some much-needed mid-season style suggestions than WTG's chicer-than-vous French counterparts? After all, with a climate consisting largely of gray days and chilly rains, transitional weather – and thus transitional clothing – is precisely the domain of the Parisian. So how do you conquer seasonal awkwardness, even if you don't live in the City of Light? We got in touch with some of our most trusted, stylish French friends to sound off on the subject.

Lyse, a Paris-based freelance translator, told us that towards the end of summer she tends to build her look around breezy pieces that go with everything, such as oversized blouses, side-slit maxi skirts and sleeveless tops – "trying to show off the tan before it disappears!" She joked, before adding, "always [choose] comfortable pieces. I hate feeling too tight in my clothes and I hate sweating, so I need clothes that I can breathe in." Severine agrees that a transitional closet should revolve around summer staples, but styled for cooler weather: think dresses with thigh-high boots (very Balenciaga), or jean shirts that you can wear like a vest in when it's warm and button up on cold days.

Cultural events producer Audrey can't tear herself away from summer dresses either, “but with this f**king weather, you’d need a trench coat!” Other pieces that get her through the season include all the ingredients you'd expect for a flawless French girl uniform: leather boots, cotton t-shirts in every possible color, a good pair of sneakers and "my pair of [Levi's] 501 jeans – they’re perfect because they're not slim, so you're not too hot and they are very comfortable."

Contrary to the others, Ninon actually enjoyed the challenge of autumn: “I love wearing a little bit of everything and being able to mix my winter and summer wardrobes!” So what’s on the fashion forecast for her? “Lots of flowy pants – which tend to be more summery, but I pair them with closed-toe shoes like sneakers. I’ll also pair chic sweatpants with long sleeve t-shirts, and top it off with a velour or jean jacket” – and of course, in classic French-girl fashion – “a silk scarf around the neck to bring everything together.”

Another Audrey, this time a brand consultant, suggested a color scheme that some Parisians may find contraversial: rose pink. "It's trending for the back-to-school-season," she told us (and we can confirm, it's true). Unlike Léonie, whose transitional must-haves include suede jackets, and Claire, who reaches for a trench coat around this time of year, Audrey prepares for the darkening clouds with an oversized anorak.

So what's the French-girl consensus on essentials for transitional weather? Classic, comfortable pieces, of course: stylish outerwear, reliable denim, relaxed-fit shirts in breathable fabrics, a pair of chic sneakers and – dare we say it? – a sunny disposition.
