This Is What A French Girl's Beach Essentials Look Like

Effortless.

share with your friends
It's been 65 years since Brigitte Bardot caused a media frenzy by stepping out in a barely-there bikini in Cannes, and modern-day French girls are still captivating the world with their effortless beach style – and we're still here taking notes. After all, the Parisian attitude par excellence – nonchalant, elegant, slightly-disheveled-but-oh-so-sexy – translates perfectly into a less-is-more approach to looking stylish on the sand. It's the beginning of August, which means that the yearly exodus from the heart of the city to more exotic locations has begun. We wanted to find out exactly what French It-girls were toting to their summer escapades in Nice, Saint-Tropez and Île de Ré so, naturally, we went straight to the most reliable source of information: Instagram.

Want to know how to hit la plage like une française? Check out these 5 must-have items that French influencers can't get enough of this summer:

All-Straw Everything

Straw has been the fashion set's go-to material this past season. Not only does it give off the perfect laid-back, ready-for-vacay vibe, it was also OG It-girl Jane Birkin's summer accessory of choice. Here, blogger extraordinaire Valentine shows us her take on straw-on-straw accessories, complete with a bike to transport her woven shopper (that could easily double as a picnic basket) with ease. To avoid looking too neutral or matchy-matchy, make sure your wicker accessories come with cute details: tie a bandana around the handle of your bag, or find a sunhat with a cheeky message embroidered on the brim.

Retro Sunnies

When it comes to fashion, French fashionistas tend to gravitate towards classic or retro styles – and sunglasses are no exception. We love the way Armelle is rocking these Kurt Kobain shades with her cherry-red one-piece (bonus points for nearly wearing all the colors of the French flag). A pair of chic black shades à la Caroline de Maigret and a reliable cat-eye are also très chic options, and will leave you looking as enchanting and mysterious as Amélie herself – just lay yourself down in the shade of a palm tree and throw on a colorful head-wrap to complete the look.

Itsy-Bitsy Bikinis

It should come as no surprise that French women have perfected the art of the sexy-yet-classy two-piece – after all, the bikini was invented by a Parisian and popularized by the likes of Brigitte Bardot. Here, Jeanne Damas shows us how to work the magic à la française with a simple black string bikini with a hint of ruched detailing. The takeaway here? Forget florescent or floral prints: a simple design and the perfect cut are all you need for that je ne sais quoi. And let's not forget an interesting beach read, in Jeanne's case, it's a copy of the far-left French daily newspaper, Libération.

A Chic Cover-Up

What's good is a stylish swimsuit if we don't have a kick-ass cover-up to transition it to the cocktail lounge? This sheer, embroidered number that golden girl Camille is rocking is the perfect example of a relaxed piece that you can throw on to instantly transform you into a sun goddess. If you want to make your cover-up really pop, pair it with some simple pieces of gold jewelry or a pair of colorful, tasseled earrings and finish the look with a cute espadrille. Don't forget to give yourself a pedicure so you can 'gram those toes of yours all covered in sand, mojito in the foreground.

After-Sun Skincare

Of course, no beach essentials list is complete without a selection of skincare products to protect us from the elements. Sunscreen is obviously a must, but other than that, Cécile also recommends two of her favorite French beauty products: a refreshing face and body spray from Evoluderm, and a body milk by Dr. Pierre Ricaud that soothes the skin while prolonging your tan. We'd add Nuxe's Prodigious Hair Oil to the mix for moisturizing our dry, post-beach ends – it was recommended to us by another stylish, street-spotted French girl.
