Knitwear to the ready: it's time to snuggle our way into fall, and when it comes to beauty that means dressing our lips in warm berry shades, heady wines, dusty pinks and delicious chocolate shades.

So put away your glossy peach pouts and summery oranges, we're about to fall for four of fall's (try saying that after applying your lipstick) most delicious colors. There has to be something good about autumn besides trench coats, right?

Feeling Fruity With Berry Beauty

Plump plum lips get full marks when it comes to sensual autumn makeup. Our tip to making your lips appear fuller and juicier than they naturally are is to apply slightly more color at the outer contour than in the middle of the lip.

Wondering what the difference is between berry shades and their close cousins on the wine spectrum? It's all about hues. As a general rule, berry shades have more red and purple to them, while wines have a touch of cooler brown. This means that cool skin with pink undertones will look great with blue-hued plum, while warm yellow undertones suit more orange-based shades such as maroon.

It's Wine O'Clock

Pillar box red, you've had your time in the sun. Now that the evenings are getting longer, it's time to sit back and order a large pout of Burgundy, Merlot or Bordeaux – whatever your lip-tipple. We love a wine-colored lip with a slick of clear gloss over the top, giving fullness and a longer-lasting tint. And, of course, there's the practicality of not worrying about your drink staining your lips! While a sultry smoky eye isn't obligatory, it sure is the perfect pairing. When it comes to color intensity, there's zero moderation needed, although as with any strong color, it's important to get the contours absolutely right, which is where a lip liner can really help.

Millennial Pink – Mwah!

Instead of rose, which has rather withered by the time fall comes around, we're opting for a moodier, dusty version, otherwise known as millennial pink. Universally flattering, this shade is part of the natural beauty movement we've seen sweeping social media. Bye bye flashy, fake-looking makeup, and hello more subtle shades that flatter what your momma gave you – like millennial pink with its nude base. Because nude tones accentuate the natural color and condition of your lips, make sure they're perfectly smooth and hydrated by using a lip exfoliator (or soft old toothbrush) to buff away any dead skin, followed by a nourishing lip balm.

Grown-Up Throwback Browns

'90s beauty is back, and we don't mean ponytails high enough to make Ariana Grande jealous, crimping or baby blue eyeshadow (thankfully). Before Kylie Jenner was even a twinkle in Kris and Caitlyn's eyes, the likes of Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Anniston and Britney Spears were already leading the fashion pack with lashings of brown lipstick! Earthy tones are essential shades for your autumn beauty bag – just be sure your lip liner (if you use one) is exactly the same shade, or you'll end up looking more '20s than '90s. We love a matte brown lip balanced with some strong, natural-looking brows and a simple sweep of mascara. Keep the complexion matte too, and avoid bronzer or over-contouring, which can quickly drag brown into, well, drag.
