Nothing beats a stylish and practical shoe when the weather isn’t on your side. There’s no point trying to reason with your favorite pair of strappy sandals when the temperature drops – the cold will go right up through the soles, even if you’ve styled them with a high-fashion sock. Don’t even think about a fluffy pool slide: the heavens could open at any moment and there’s nothing sadder than a soggy shoe. Of course, there are plenty of options to keep your feet in check through fall and winter, but there is nothing quite so cool and comfortable as a pair of Dr Martens.
The brand dates back to the early 20th Century, but it was when the company expanded to the U.K. that it became a phenomenon. Upon arrival in Britain, the iconic yellow stitching was added and the “AirWair” soles were patented, and lo the Doc as we know it was born. It may be a style that’s over 50 years old, but everyone from the fashion set to global subcultures still can’t get enough of it.
As well as offering the original shoe and eight-eyelet boot designs in a variety of colors (which currently includes a rainbow glitter option, just sayin’), the company keeps things fresh with regular collabs. Everyone from Paris’ iconic Colette concept store and Vetements to London’s kooky label Lazy Oaf, and cult classic cartoons including Beavis and Butthead and Adventure Time have left their mark in the brand’s archive.
We’re particularly excited about to the latest Supreme x Dr Martens drop, which hit stores today. The skate brand announced the collab on their Insta earlier this week, showing the classic three-eye shoe updated with embroidered sacred hearts in burgundy, black and green as part of their AW17 collection. We think a red pair will be the perfect finish to a humbug-stripe pant and loose-knit sweater for a casual fall look – or try sneaking the black pair into work to liven up an otherwise monochrome outfit with their pops of red and yellow stitching.
Docs have been picked up by everyone from factory workers, punks, goths grungers and international supermodels, with the likes of Gigi Hadid and Iman Hammam styling theirs with ankle-grazing denim pieces. Emma Watson and Hailey Baldwin opted for the leggy look with mini skirts (or, in Hailey’s case, a big, baggy t-shirt and no pants) – even North West knows a timeless trend when she sees one, rocking a pair of mini boots with leather-look leggings.
Check out all the style inso you need to work your Docs this fall, then scroll down to shop our selection of original DMs as well as a handful of lookalikes that will leave more room in the budget:
