Don't Let The Winter Weather Mess With Your Curls

The wind isn't your stylist.

With weather conditions taking a turn for the worse, there are lots of adjustments that need to be made to our closet and beauty routine. First, slip into that fuzzy teddy coat to cuddle you through the cruellest of inclemencies. Next, wrap up in an impossibly large logo scarf. While most of you remains stylishly concealed from the elements, you are still left with the problem of what to do with your hair – especially if it's curly.

While we are thankful that berets are still a hot trend this season, there are only so many days in a row we can rock the look (think of the IG!). Besides, any curly haired hat person knows the commitment required with millinery: you may have saved your locks from the wind and rain, but the moment you remove your headwear you will reveal a mass of squashed down, awkwardly kinked hair.

So, for the days when you have chosen to let your mane remain exposed, despite the forecast, here are our top tips for keeping your hair free from frizz, fuzz and general fiascos through winter.

Your first stop is a weekly or fortnightly hair mask formulated especially for curly girls, such as Kérastase's Masque Curl Idéal or the Shu Uemura Urban Moisture Hydro-Nourishing Deep Treatment Masque. Curly hair in particular benefits from extra moisture because of all the kinks and curves that can both prevent oil from travelling the length of the hair fiber – which explains dry, frizzy ends – and can become damaged and broken due to tangling, as not all the hair strands want to follow the same direction!

Using hair oils has been popular for a while now. They're great for unruly hair on cold, blustery winter days. A few drops of lavender, coconut or argan oil smoothed into the lengths and ends can do wonders for your hair's condition and give it a healthy-looking shine. Butter-infused products (shea, cocoa or almond) are also recommended for providing a protective layer around the hair shaft.

Here's a new cardinal rule to add to your beauty bible: diffuse, don't blow dry, and always on a cool temperature. Unlike a hairdryer, which will harshly blow your locks into all manner of unusual positions, a diffuser gently encourages your natural curls to form firmly, while the low temperature prevents heat damage – a major cause of frizz, flyaways and dryness. To keep curls voluminous but behaved when diffusing, scrunch in a light curling spray or mousse before drying, and try to avoid rubbing hair with a towel immediately after your shower, which can damage the hair's cuticles.
