How To Cover Up Like A Cool Girl This Summer

Homer Simpson eat your heart out.

For those of us familiar with the muumuu, the mere mention of the (very satisfying) word might conjure up images of Homer Simpson in a dress, or the long, loose-fitting, printed gowns traditionally worn by women on breezy Hawaiian beaches – as the term actually refers to. Whatever springs to mind, we can all agree that while this type of baggy clothing can be worn in total comfort, it isn't exactly a Saint Laurent party dress. But we think that's all about to change.

Original muumuus are cut to hang freely from the shoulders down to the calf or ankle, with little definition around the neckline, and none whatsoever at the waist. It's a forgiving form that can be very appealing for that very reason. But lately, we're more inclined than ever to put down our body-con ensembles as we’re spotting a surge in ballooning mini dresses that similarly act as cover-alls with high-fashion details to take the look to the next level. We, personally, can’t imagine a better muumuu-inspired trend than a stylish and roomy dress for the sweltering summer heat.

As with everything in fashion, the trick is a balancing act. Be sure that you counteract the voluminous design by picking one that is cropped just above your knees (in doing so accentuating your legs and reducing the total amount of fabric). Look out for details like large ruffles on the main body of the dress, or a dip hem that reigns in the billowing circle of the skirt. Subtle smocking at the waist or just below the bust will also flatter your figure by adding a hint of definition without going so far as completely outlining it.

A bold, colorful print will also aid in drawing focus away from the circumference of the dress, as will stylish focal points such as bell sleeves, pussybows, embroidery – and did we mention ruffles? The more ruffles, the merrier.
