Bloggers Agree This French Chapeau Is A Fall Must-Have

Though we've made our penchant for floppy straw hats known (preferably ones that say "rosé all day" around the brim), we've come to recognize that they are best worn on sandy beaches and sunny days. As we say goodbye to summer, we've been wondering which more weather-appropriate hat should take its place. It didn't take long before we realized that our fave bloggers had already figured out the answer to this conundrum: the beret.

While the history of the beret is certainly a fascinating one (did you know it dates back nearly a century and was first popularized for women by Coco Chanel?), it's the recent iterations of the trend that we're concerned with.

Back in 2015, Alessandro Michele brought the headwear firmly into the spotlight with several stylish updates on the look for his debut collection at Gucci – and continued to rework the look through several more seasons. Needless to say, everyone in the fashion set ran immediately to their local milliner to try one on in every color and pattern. The addition of a bold beret to either coordinate with an equally jazzy outfit or to spice up a more pared-back one has been a big look for several seasons.

However, possibly as a reaction to all that's been going on in the world, earlier this year, the hat's heroic roots made a triumphant return during Paris Fashion Week. French power house, Dior, presented a runway filled with models donning black leather versions of the traditional chapeau, giving the lineup a military air – even Rihanna rocked one in sartorial solidarity as she sat in the front row. So now there are two camps within the blogosphere: the luxe, leather-clad style and the eclectic color-pop look.

Wherever your allegiance lies, the beret is fashion-forward and iconic, striking the perfect balance between feminine accessory and a rugged military finish. We love how it sits with almost every hair style and accentuates other accessories like sharp sunglasses (while the sun's still shining) and statement earrings
