Refresh Your Back-To-School Beauty Kit Before Semester Starts

Straight-A style.

share with your friends
Back. To. School. Three words that carry with them the weight of academic pressure, rollercoaster friendship dynamics and the responsibility of choosing the personality-defining annual stationary set.

There is one way, however, to ensure you're leading the fashion pack right from the get-go, while also vacuuming up A+s in every class: a brand new beauty kit to help you de-stress, re-focus and be the envy of your peers thanks to ever-flawless makeup. But before you hit "add to cart" on every product on the Sephora's online store, we have some suggestions for striping your beauty kit back to the bare essentials.

Check out our recommendations for the most essential beauty products to slip into your rucksack when going Back. To. School. And breathe:

Keep It Light: Go Multi-Use And Miniature

Heavy on the style, light in the bag. This semester we're all about Ms for Millennials when it comes to our makeup: Multi-use, Mini Must-haves. Because all those heavy books can take up an unfair proportion of your school bag, it's important to opt for as many multi-purpose products as possible. This means tinted lip balm to replace the balm-lipstick-gloss trio, BB cream with added SPF as a moisturizer, foundation and sunscreen replacement, and an eyeliner that can double up as a brow liner and maybe an emergency pencil for math class (worst case scenario).

They're cute, they're small and they're within a student budget, which is why we love pint-sized products! The main go-to minis you want in your school bag are, in this order: deodorant (we find the sticks and roll-ons last longer), hand sanitizer, volumizing hairspray and your signature perfume. You could even create your own miniature by buying a small 50ml bottle to fill up with your favorite hand cream.

Slay From Nine-To-Five

You won't have time to redo your look in-between classes, so ensure your complexion remains perfection and your lashes don't run away, with some long-lasting makeup. A long-wear foundation is a no-brainer, but you can increase its efficacy by applying a mattifying, pore-reducing primer in the morning, which will not only give you longer hold, but will prevent shine from showing up in the afternoon. Just in case, a compact pressed powder can easily be slipped into your bag's side pocket for last-minute sheen control.

When it comes to lashes, a waterproof mascara is always a good idea. This is not just in case the weather decides to drizzle all over your first day back, but in the event of a surprise sports class or an emotional emergency – homecoming reunions can get teary.

Do Your Beauty Homework

Put those books down (temporarily) and think of your inner and outer well-being. We all need a way to wind down, especially after the whirlwind that is the back-to-school period, so take an evening – or several – to chill out with some body and soul pampering. Combine a long soak in the bath and a herbal tea with a de-stressing face mask and some essential oils to help relax while giving your skin a well-deserved treat.

If you don't have a face mask, get your creative side going and make your own! The refrigerator is your oyster: egg whites, banana, avocado, natural yogurt and organic honey are all reputed for their beneficial skin properties. Mix up a few and leave on for five-to-ten minutes before rinsing off with cool water. You could also make a homemade body scrub to exfoliate any dead skin cells using a teaspoon of sea salt or sugar mixed with half a cup of olive or melted coconut oil, and then also use the oil (minus the granules) as a rinse-out hair mask on the tips – an especially good idea for parched post-summer-vacay hair.
