ripped jeans

Congruent with the ideology of the punk scene of the 1970/80s that sought to revolt and rebel with hard-edge melodies, short, choppy songs and a general undercurrent of anti-establishment, jeans lost their smooth contour and instead became ripped, shredded and torn. Becoming a symbol of non-conformity, ripped jeans were further destroyed through acid wash bleaching, a style that continued into the grunge era of the 1990s and later re-emerged in the late 2000s with the revival of grunge and punk. Today, ripped jeans along with cute cut-off denim shorts are frequently adorned by the tumblr loving, hipster population.
