The monokini has had a strange and convoluted history over the past century, dividing many on the subject of fetish desire and the rights of women. First designed by Rudi Gernreich in 1964 as a protest against a repressive society, the monokini had a normal bikini bottom, but the top was held up by shoestring laces to make a halter-neck. Since then, summer wear has gotten ever more sexy and daring, with even the conservative one-piece cut-out shapes that reveal more than they hide. Whether they are at the beach or by the pool, celebrities like Paris Hilton know that a monokini can be either cute and bright or smoldering with a bandage top.
